This chapter is very timely as just last night I was watching an excellent Christmas program by the AWANA kids in our church. The whole theme was on being LOST (both physically and spiritually) and our need for someone to come and FIND us. Praise the Lord, HE FOUND ME and saved my soul from it's lost condition. It is the whole reason I am able to celebrate this Christmas season with any kind of meaning.

2. The disciples saw the great need of the multitude and how far short their measly lunch fell of what was necessary to feed the people. Jesus took what they had and saw how He could take it and transform it to meet the need of the people. How do you normally come to God when you are overwhelmed with something "impossible"? How do you think God is viewing your current situation?

3. How do you know that Jesus did not just give the multitudes a bite or two -- just enough to quiet the hunger pangs -- but gave them more than what they needed? (9:16-17)

4. Several times in this chapter Jesus' disciples did or said something that showed that they really didn't understand what Jesus was doing or what he was teaching. Can you find any examples? Belated post for Luke's Advent Day 7&8

4. According to Luke 7:36-50 who loved Jesus most? What is the normal response from one who has been forgiven of great sin or great debt? How does your demonstration of love and thankfulness to God compare to the woman in these verses?

Dec 8 -- Luke 8

1. In verses 1-3 Luke mentions some others besides the twelve disciples who were with Jesus. Who were they and why do you think they were recorded by name in this chapter?

2. In the parable of the sower and the seed, Jesus explained to his disciples the significance of the seed being God's message and the different soils representing the hearts of the different people who hear that message. What kind of soil are you? Does Jesus ever condemn the sower for "wasting" his seed by throwing in onto poor soil?

3. The remainder of chapter 8 tells of miracles performed by Jesus. Do you have a favorite story out of these? Why?

Luke's Advent Day 3 & 4

We were out of the house all day Saturday and Sunday and I did not have these discussion questions written up ahead of time (I am writing them as I do the daily readings) but I will go ahead and post them now so that I will have a complete set for future years.

Day 4 -- Luke 4

1. Jesus was tempted by Satan three times. Can you see how the three temptations match up with the three descriptions of our sinful nature in 1 John 2:16?

2. How did Jesus respond to Satan at each temptation? What can you learn from his example when you are faced with temptation to sin?

3. What was it about Jesus's words and deeds that amazed the people? (4:32 & 36)

the angels:
the shepherds:
the people who talked with the shepherds:
Mary, Jesus' mother:
Simeon:
Anna:

3. Why do you think Simeon and Anna were able to recognize that this baby Jesus was the Messiah they had long awaited?

A New Twist on The Advent Calendar

A friend of mine on facebook mentioned her plan to read a chapter of Luke each day from today till Christmas Eve as her own personal "advent calendar" to see the full picture and be reminded of why Jesus came to earth. And then, on Christmas Day she plans to reread Luke chapter 2 to "rejoice with the angels" on Christ's birth. I thought that sounded like a great idea for myself and for my kids, or even to do as family devotions each night. With that thought in mind, I jumped over to Biblegateway.com and checked out the different Bible versions. I would guess that they have whatever your favorite version is or you could try a different version for these readings that might make these familiar passages come alive again for you. Since I still have one "young reader" I am thinking of having the kids read from the New International Reader's Version to see if things are a little easier for her to understand. To read today's passage in the NIRV click here.

If you want to go a step further with your kids, your family, or just yourself here are a couple of questions to think about as you read Luke 1.

1. Both Zechariah and Mary had an encounter with the angel Gabriel who gave them important information about an extraordinary pregnancy in their future. What is the difference in how each one responded to the news from the Lord? (luke 1:18-20, 34-38)

2. For what specific thing(s) about Mary is Elizabeth thankful? What happened that confirmed to her that Mary's baby was the Messiah she had been waiting for? (1:39-45)

3. Many people all over the world have gone one step further than Elizabeth and their praise of Mary has turned into worship of her, praying to her, referring to her as the "Mother of God", and even teaching that her own conception and birth were miraculous and without sin. What evidence do we have from Mary herself that she was a sinner just like everyone of us? (1:46-49)

4. Zechariah and Elizabeth's son was chosen for a very important task. What was that and what was the message he was to spread to the people? (1:67-80)
